What Is An Extreme Weight Loss Diet?

There are different opinions on what should be considered an extreme weight loss diet. The amount of weight that is recommended for most regular plans is one or two pounds per week, and some people only work towards dropping that amount per month. Fast weight loss is often considered five pounds of weight or more per week. Any plan calling for more than five pounds per week should be considered an extreme weight loss diet.

An extreme weight loss diet is almost always going to be a starvation diet. A starvation diet may mean not eating much of anything at all or it can be a fasting diet that allows you to drink liquids. These also vary between drinking only water, which is a true fast, and consuming fruit juices that help clean and detoxify your body while you drop the pounds.

Colon cleansing diets have become new again as a way to flush pounds from your body with the added benefit to improving your health and even preventing cancer. These diets are extreme in that you are advised with most of them not to ingest any solid food for the duration of the cleansing. A lot of fluids are flushed through your body so fast that it probably wouldn’t have time to absorb any nutrients if you were giving it any to absorb.

Some of these colon cleansing fasts are supposed to be used for only a period of a few days and probably won’t do much harm in that length of time. The problem is that many people become “addicted” to any type of extreme weight loss diet that gives them the results they want. Often, they will continue with these diets for a month or for several months. Others will go off of them for short periods before they go back on them again. While an extreme weight loss diet plan can be successful, it should be approached with common sense and forethought.

It is easy to understand how using an extreme weight loss diet for a long period of time can impact the nutrition your body is getting. What may not be apparent is the permanent damage you can do to your metabolism from going back and forth between starvation and eating normal, solid foods. Also, the cleansing diet will flush the gut flora from your digestive tract that you need to digest your food.

Sometimes people who go on an extreme weight loss diet forget to drink enough fluids to stay hydrated. They may not realize that when fluids are going through your body quicker than normal, it takes more fluids to keep everything working. If you ever become dehydrated, you will find it to be an uncomfortable experience that is anything but good for you.

Consider an extreme weight loss diet only for short term use, and follow the directions carefully. Do not stay on an extreme weight loss diet for longer than the proscribed time, and always consult your doctor if you have questions or concerns about your health.
